| Basics • Name: Peter Patrick Pettigrew • Birthdate: 11 November, 1959 • Citizenship: British • Current residence: Grindlylow Gardens, Diagon Alley, London, England • Blood status: Halfblood Physical • Height/weight: 5'3" / hefty but not fat, thankyou. • Hair/eyes: blond / blue • Manner of speech: Whenever Peter doesn't spend several minutes to think about what he wants to say before opening his mouth, his speech is peppered with stuttering and half finished thoughts. In order to get out a complete thought without stumbling over it, Peter has to form the statement completely in his mind before speaking, and often, this causes him to lose the thread of a conversation or leaves him several steps behind everyone else. • Manner of dress: Peter often tries to hide his size with baggy clothing. His t-shirts, jumpers, and jeans all have a bit of give to them. Peter sticks to causal clothings because anything formal or even remotely dressy makes him resemble a large child. • Physical description: While Peter doesn't consider himself a large individual, he is unable to deny that he is chubby. That fact shows most around his face, neck, and the pudge that sticks out just below his waistline. Short, standing as just barely 5'3", in comparison to most of the people that he surrounds himself with, this makes his girth that much more of an obvious attribute. Peter doesn't help his height situation, making himself seem even shorter by almost constantly keep his eyes on the floor. His height combined with his dirty blond hair and light blue eyes makes Peter resemble his mother rather than his father in all respects except for his build. Peter endeavors to maintain a well kept appearance, but there are times when he fails at this so spectacularly that it's hard not to notice. When rushed (often because he's accidentally overslept), Peter can end up looking like a laundry heap. It was more obvious when he was in school than it is now, but even now sometimes he can end up somewhere with his shirt on inside out, half untucked, and buttoned up oddly because he happened to miss one of them. • First impression: Peter usually strikes people as timid, self-conscious, and not too bright upon first glance. Utterly unremarkable, he doesn't tend to leave any sort of lasting impression on most of the people he meets. Peter has gotten quite used to having to introduce himself multiple times before he's remembered. • PB: Taylor Handley - 1, 2, 3, 4 Personal • General personality: Peter is one of those people who are almost impossible to pin down. He's a terrific actor. Peter is able to adapt whatever persona is appropriate for the situation he's presented with. He has absolutely no qualms about lying directly to someone's face if it keeps him out of trouble. And he has gotten rather used to pretending to be something he's not to keep other people happy. If he has a feeling that letting someone see what he's really like will end up putting them off, he'll do his best to mask his behavior. Of course, this type of attitude often leaves people with little idea of what he's really like. When he isn't putting on, Peter is naturally shy, preferring to keep to himself when it comes to most things. This lead to a lot of isolation in his early years, pulling himself away from the crowd when it became clear that he wasn't able to break into it. Not that he didn't try his best to place himself into the thick of things. Always the people pleaser, Peter attempted in his childhood to endear himself to the other children by basically becoming a doormat, allowing himself to be trodden on without complaint and helping everyone around him any way that he saw fit. While this allowed him some sort of inclusion for awhile, children are fickle and most of them quickly became bored with him, which is when he withdrew and started focusing on his own motivations rather than catering to other people. Peter was never afraid to think big when it came to projects or his ambitions. He had quite a few ideas about what he'd been when he grew up, almost all of the jobs being of the muggle variety. All of these dreams were then squashed rather vehemently by his father who didn't want his only son trapped in some 'ridiculous muggle profession' when he didn't have to be. While his career goals might have been nixed early on, that didn't mean his projects had to be. Most of them weren't the least bit practical or functional, but that didn't stop him. He dove right into any project that he undertook with an untempered enthusiasm, working until another idea would grip him, and he would alter his focus. His mother often referred to him as a wayward dreamer, someone who had to understand the reality of life before they can get off of the ground. Reality hit Peter hard, repetitively, after he started school. Peter was used to being teased because he was short, fat, and academically slow, but being dropped into an environment that was so drastically different from the muggle one in which he was raised, this caused him to revert to many of his old ways as well as focus upon his own insecurities much more intently than he ever had before. While his issues have lessened since leaving Hogwarts, his insecurities still flair up every now and then. He knows that he isn't as talented as James, as likable as Sirius, or as smart as Remus, and sometimes, he finds it difficult to figure out what real value that his existence holds. He's never really been able to shake the nagging doubts that he's had since being a child that he's not good enough, for his father, for his mother, for his friends, for school, for a career, or for anything. • Strengths and weaknesses: Peter doesn't believe that he has any strengths. He's not brave or smart or athletic. He's certainly not strong like his father or compassionate like his mother. And his friends make him look like a joke. But what Peter doesn't realize is that his strengths are highly unorthodox and are one of the things that kept the Marauders out of a good deal of the trouble that they could have gotten into back in school. Peter's trademark is his capacity for deception. For someone who is so nervous and timid, it's amazing how calm and controlled he can be when spinning a tale. He can lie right to someone's face without even flinching. Of course, his degree of comfort with you has some bearing upon how effective the lies will be. McGonagall was usually able to crack him, and if confronted, he can't lie to either of his parents to save his life. Peter has a highly creative mind, one that often prompts him to come up with ideas that are distinctively 'outside of the box'. However, this way of thinking often prevents him from being able to see logistical problems with his ideas or options outside of the line of action that he is determined to take. Peter isn't exactly magically gifted in most areas, often fumbling and causing more harm than good. But the one thing that he has been able to master is Charms work. The spells seem to come easily to him, the words tripping off his tongue with a practiced ease. It really is such a shame that his Charms skills are something that Peter is both proud and shameful off. His father says Charms is a discipline for housewives, after all. What does that say about him? • Mental health: Peter's mental health is...questionable, at best. He's not batshit insane by any stretch of the imagination, but he has some severe self-esteem and dependency issues. His fears are slowly starting to migrate into unaddressed bitterness, resentment, and feelings of aggression toward the people that he cares about the most. This is a fact that scares him more than anything else he's ever come across, and because of that, he's been trying very hard to pretend like these issues don't exist. Relationships • Relatives: Mitchell Alan Pettigrew: Father; pureblood; (b.1930 - d.13/9/1979); Gryffindor [1941-1948]; Hit Wizard for the Ministry of Magic.
Alissa Melissa Pettigrew née Anderson: Mother; muggle; (b.1936); Housewife.
• Relationship with family: Despite some rather obvious paternal issues, Peter loves both of his parents more than life itself, and he would do anything to make sure that they're happy and safe. • Sexuality: Heterosexual • Significant other: N/A • Children: None Educational • School: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry • Years: 1971-1978 • House: Gryffindor • Achievements: Charms Club Vice-President • NEWTS: Outstanding: Charms Exceeds Expectations: Care of Magical Creates & Astronomy Acceptable: Transfiguration Poor: Defense Against The Dark Arts Occupational • Occupation: Assistant at Crook's Magical Law Office. • Previous jobs, if any: N/A The War • How is your character involved in the war? At first, Peter believed deeply in what the Order was doing, but after several deaths of Order members, he started to doubt just how effective an organization they were. After his father was killed during a raid group of supposed criminals that turned out to be a concentration of Death Eaters, Peter's fear was severely strengthened. If the Order wasn't able to save their own people and a group of ministry trained individuals who should have been able to defend themselves was wiped out, what sort of chance did any of them stand to actually make it through this war intact? A deep resentment and anger toward his friends that he didn't even realize was brewing inside him exploded to the forefront of his mind. What had they dragged him into? Did they want him dead? They knew that he wasn't nearly as strong as them. If he was forced into a situation that required him to duel, he was done for. All of these things compounded on top of each other that when Peter's apartment was raided by Death Eaters in an attempt to eliminate another possible Order member, he offered himself up as a spy in order to save his own life. Initially, he was under the delusion that he could provide trivial information and coast through the war while keeping both of his bases covered. Unfortunately, that's not how the Death Eaters work, and with someone as easily molded and broken as Peter, Voldemort would have, in short order, someone who was loyal as long as his own neck was safe. • Will your character die during the next year? No • If yes, please give some details on how/when you'd like this to occur: N/A Overall History Each section should be at least one paragraph • Family/childhood: Peter was born to Alissa and Mitchell Pettigrew in the spring of 1960. Due to complications with the pregnancy and delivery, his mother had to undergo several operations after his birth which left her barren and physically weak. It also meant that Peter would be their one and only child, all their hopes were invested in him. Because of that, Peter feels an extreme pressure to succeed and be perfect for his parents. As a child, his natural magic energy was weak. He was easily injured, and he never really made anything happen out of the ordinary. His father was extremely worried that his only son would turn out being a Squib and that his family name (which, granted, held little meaning anymore to anyone other than Mitchell) would die (in the magical world, at least) with him. Alissa, being a muggle, had done her best to soothe her husband's worries as much as she could. If Peter did turn out to be non-magical, they'd make sure he'd be able to find a perfectly good Muggle career. ![]() Peter attended a Muggle elementary school until his 10th year. In school, Peter was always the boy that was just a little bit slower than the rest of the kids, both mentally and physically. It wasn't that he was dumb. He was quite the opposite, actually. It just took him a little longer to catch onto things than it did the other kids his age. He never made a lot of real friends in school. He spent much of his younger years hiding behind the illusion that he was part of the tough guy crowd. A few hallow praises, and those guys would leave him be and everyone else would think that if they bothered him, they'd have to deal with them, too. Deception, Peter figured out early on, was the key to survival. The year before Peter would have received his Hogwarts letter, Mitchell went and withdrew Peter from his school, explaining the actions to the administration as wanting to home tutor his son before sending him to a private academy the next year. Peter spent that year learning as much about magic as his father had to teach, frequently accompanying his father to work at the Ministry in the Magical Law Enforcement Department; though, he always had to stay behind when his father went to make an arrest. Peter was highly squeamish about his father's job, though. He didn't like the idea of having to face down a criminal in any sort of way...or even just facing a normal person down. As much as Mitchell was hoping that he would be, Peter was positive from an early age that he'd never have what it took to be a hit wizard like his father. • School/work: When Peter left for his first year at Hogwarts, he spent the time on the train shoved in the corner of a crowded compartment, trying not to cry for just utter fear. He was alone, not even his mother there to support him. And he was scared that it would be that way all through his years there, or that someone would realize how weak his magic was and take advantage of that fact. This wasn't like elementary school when he could feign connections in order to keep himself in one piece. This was Hogwarts, a place where, according his father, you either sank or swam. Peter was extremely nervous waiting to be sorted. Why was Pettigrew so far back in the alphabet? As he watched student after student take their places, he couldn't help but wonder what would happen if he wasn't placed anywhere. What if he really was a squib like his father had always complained to his mother when he'd thought Peter wasn't listening? What if he was here by mistake? Would he be sent back on the train, alone and in disgrace? He was so lost in thought that he missed his name being called and had to be shoved up towards the stool by a dark haired boy. Taking his place on the stool, Peter swallowed heavily as he heard the hat start talking, trying to figure out just what House to put him into. Peter didn't know much about the Houses at Hogwarts other than what his father had told him: 'Gryffindor's the best. Ravenclaws are bookish nerds. Hufflepuffs are weak-willed limp wristed pansies. And Slytherins are all better off dead.' So when the Hat threatened him with Slytherin as it was sat on his head, Peter very nearly had a panic attack. He didn't want his father to think that he was 'better off dead'. As he sat on the stool, whimpering 'No, no, no,' over and over again, the Hat relented from its listing of all of his qualities that fell under Slytherin's standards (his knack at deception, his willingness to do whatever it takes to make sure he stays on top, his sheer quiet cunning that people don't even realize is there), it finally started to consider the other options. Hufflepuff was right out for reasons that the Hat didn't see any point in divulging. And while Peter was street smart, he lacked the drive and necessary curiosity for Ravenclaw. That only left one other option. As the Hat exclaimed, "Gryffindor!" to the gathering in the Great Hall, Peter dashed from the stool in front of the staff table, shoving the hat hastily into Professor McGonagall's hands, before plopping down at the table of red and gold and, literally, burying his head against the shoulder of the firstie sitting next to him, Remus Lupin. When flanked on his other side by the dark haired boy who had shoved him when his name had been called, James Potter, and taunted by his clinginess, Peter was finally able to relax enough to realize how ridiculous he was acting. Redfaced, he mumbled a quick apology before ducking his head and folding his hands in his lap. Ironically enough, these two individuals along with their other dormmate, Sirius Black, would become the best and truest friends that Peter was ever able to call his own. Sure, they would give him a hard time every now and again, but that's what friends do after all. ![]() And it was a good thing he could call them friends because as far as his coursework went, Peter struggled in almost every subject. Without help, he probably would have absolutely bombed his Transfiguration, Potions, Defense, and Herbology classes. The only subject he didn't seem to have any difficulty with was Charms. In fact, he breezed through the class with little to no difficulty. He was able to puzzle out solutions to Charm related problems in almost a flash and managed O's in the class without even trying. Peter never considered this talent anything to be proud of, though, because his father was constantly complaining about his other grades. When he'd attempt to point out his excellence in Charms, the only replies he would receive were scornful, at best. "What are you going to do with that, Peter? Charms are worthless unless you plan on being a housewife like your mother." When James came up with the idea of becoming Animagus, Peter was positive that he wouldn't be able to manage it. Transfiguration was one of his worst subjects in his early years. There wasn't a class that went where he didn't tick off McGonagall. Either he wouldn't be able to manage the spell, or he would muck it up so badly that he ended up screwing up everyone sitting around him. It was a class that he would have happily avoided for the remainder of his school days if at all possible. Of course, these worries and protests didn't phase his mate in the least. Either they'd all manage it, or they wouldn't do it at all. It took quite a bit of agony and several years, but they were all eventually able to master the advanced Transfiguration technique. Peter was the last one out of the three of them to be able to do it without something going horribly wrong. Near the middle of his 5th year, Peter mastered his Animagus form, a dirty blond rat. While Remus, James, and Sirius weren't at all bothered by the form that he had taken, it initially troubled Peter. James and Sirius's forms appeared to match their personalities. Did him being a 'rat' say something about who he was, or was it just a pure coincidence? It wasn't an issue he was able to think on much, though, because OWLs preparation was absolutely killing him. Peter was able to make it through all of the tests without passing out, no matter how horribly he think he screwed up on some of them. The only thing he knows is that he bombed his Potions practical. There's not much luck that he passed since his cauldron exploded in the middle of the exam. Despite his issues with testing, Peter was able to leave school with a decent number of OWLs and NEWTs to his name. He still swears to this day that he owes those scores all to James, Remus, and Sirius, but there's no denying that he's the one that took the tests. • Recent history: His father was disgusted with his grades (which weren't enough to get him into either Auror or Hit Wizard training, like his father had planned) but pulled some strings to get Peter an internship at Crook's Magical Law Office. The work was interesting enough, but Peter got quite sick of the sideways looks that the old purebloods gave him when they stepped into the office. He was just a halfblood, after all. Despite the client's apparent disgust with him, Peter was a good worker and a quick study when it came to the things that he was learning. Oddly enough, he picked it up almost as quickly as he did his Charms lessons with the occasional exceptions (the rules attached to property are one of these things), and his wages from the internship were enough to get him a small flat over one of the shops in Diagon Alley, barely a block from the Leaky Cauldron. Not long after graduating, Peter was pulled into joining the Order of the Phoenix along with Sirius, Remus, and James. At first, Peter was happy to be doing something to help defend the wizarding world (just like his father always wanted him to), and he was like an eager little puppy when it came to the assignments that he was given. Right now, he's just trying to cope with the real world, getting along as best he can in an environment full of people who loathe a family like his, an old pureblood name diluted by worthless muggle.
